We are facing times none of us ever thought we'd
experience: the financial breakdown of all that we thought was secure.

Commentary by Norma Sherry

We are facing times none of us ever thought we'd experience: the financial breakdown of all that we thought was secure.

Hundreds of thousands of homeowners are at the brink of losing their homes; multitudes of our workforce have lost their jobs;
businesses can't afford to keep their doors open and truckers don't have the funds to fill their gas tanks to deliver our groceries and goods. Families are suffering and the threat of becoming homeless has become a real calamity for way too many of us.

We, all of us, are facing a future too bleak to contemplate. How did this happen? Haven't we always been told we're the richest
nation in the world? We should feel betrayed. Where were our legislators? Where was our president? Pundits warn that the touted $700 billion bailout is grossly understated – one to two trillion is the figure many stress is more realistic.

But, does this bailout include the families facing the loss of all they've worked for – after all our government and Wall Street are
not alone when it comes to spending money they didn't have – or for reaching for that elusive grandeur we all wish we could achieve. We, the American public, had good teachers.

We learned our understanding of finances from our government. We looked up to them and aspired to follow their experienced
experts. So, when our government borrowed money when they overspent, ditto did we. When they bought that which they couldn't afford on credit, so did we. They encouraged a liaise affaire attitude and we, as the excellent students we've
become, followed suit. We didn't worry, we had no sense of why we should, after all, our country and its financial wizards were guiding our tutelage expertly.

Don't Worry Be Happy

Philip J. Rappa

There is no need to be a forensic pathologist to understand the cause of death of America's financial institutions and our credibility abroad. The only thing required is a familiarity with our history.

Over the past twenty-nine years beginning with the 96th Congress and concluding with the 106th, there has been a systematic concerted effort by our elected officials to unravel the remaining vestiges of our institutions that represented our sovereignty as a nation. If we just round up these usual suspects, based on reasonable suspicion we can begin to delineate more then just probable cause, but most importantly the direct cause of our misfortune.
